At 1km in length, Maroubra is probably the most hazardous beach in the area. Facing due east, it takes the full brunt of the Tasman Sea and often produces large swells and high waves. Four to five rips span the beach at any one time and the northern end is particularly hazardous with rocks and a strong drain.

The Surf Club patrols Maroubra in the summer and seasonal council lifeguards are present. A great beach, though swimmers should always stay inside the flags and remain cautious at all times.
